OODD Studios is an interdisciplinary design cooperative founded in Leipzig in 2021 that explores the potential of contemporary craft in relation to the advancing digitalisation of society through different concept-based projects. The fields of work of the two founders, Magdalena Sophie Orland and Susanne Ostwald, range from textiles and graphics to photography and fashion to interior and installation design.

SUSANNE OSTWALD is a graduate fashion designer with an international career, primarily as the creative mind behind the London-based brand Ostwald Helgason and as a freelance design director for various fashion houses. Since 2017, she has additionally been active in the field of design education.

MAGDALENA SOPHIE ORLAND is a textile designer with a multiple award-winning M.A. degree from Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle (2019).

We are united by our shared enthusiasm for the unique impact of the interplay of colour, texture and visual haptics. With a gentle, yet powerful optimism, we dedicate ourselves to the value and depth of what is created by hand and experience. The fact that our work is created through very time-consuming processes and fundamental engagement with the materials used is as important to us as the relevance of the preceding artistic concept and the resulting aesthetic outcome.

How do you develop a tridimensional shape when the source material is groundbreakingly new and conventional joining techniques will not work?  What is the position of a designer in today's world?

What are our responsibilities? What are the issues we want to address in our work? These questions define the design position of OODD Studios, which is further influenced by the contrasting characters of the two founders.  For the constant exploration of design values results from the interplay between Magdalena's dreamy feminine approach to design and Susanne's clean architectural orientation. This dualism is reflected in the style of OODD Studios: timeless and modern, fragile and expressive, reduced to the essentials and utterly distinctive.
